Robin sensed Jake’s tension as they drove to the ferry to meet up with the sketch artist. Detective Beck said he’d found an artist he’d worked with before, someone he could trust to keep quiet about this assignment.
Still, from Jake’s body language, Robin knew he was in defensive mode, so unlike his posture back at the inn. He fit in surprisingly well there, with Caroline, Sketch and even the little boy, Mack. Robin found it hard to believe someone like Jake wasn’t married with children of his own, but he’d been a military man, then a government agent, and, most recently, a caregiver for his mom. Still, a busy life was no reason to be single, right?
Yet, Robin was single. Jenn said Robin was interested in Trevor, which must mean Robin didn’t have a serious boyfriend or fiancé. Anxiety clawed its way up from her subconscious.
No, with her memories came determination to take back her life and fight for what she wanted. Personal safety topped that list.
“So, what’s the plan once we get there?” she asked.
“You hang back. I’ll meet the artist at the ferry dock,” Jake said.
“How will you know him?”
“He’ll be wearing a Chicago White Sox baseball cap.”
She glanced at him in question.
“Ethan used to be a big Chicago sports fan. His uncle lives on the South Side.”
“Do you think someone will follow the artist onto the ferry?”
“Unlikely, but we should be ready for anything.”
They found street parking and Jake scanned the surrounding shops and restaurants before motioning for Robin to get out of the car. He’d driven Caroline’s vintage Chevy, so they wouldn’t be identified by his truck.
As she shut the car door, she caught a glimpse of her reflection in the window. She was unrecognizable, even to herself, with her blond, cropped hair, glasses and pale blue sundress and white sweater. Jake wore a pressed shirt, tie and navy suit jacket over jeans.
She remembered the clothes she’d been wearing when she was brought into the hospital: simple, professional and boring. At least her sundress and sweater had a little style to it.
Walking side by side, Jake and Robin looked like a romantic couple on an evening out. She almost took his hand to complete the picture but caught herself.
“What?” he said, glancing sideways at her.
“Nothing.” She smiled.
“It will be okay.”
He took her hand and gave it a squeeze. They approached the crosswalk, and she spotted a lighthouse in the distance, a beacon of hope. She hesitated and glanced up into Jake’s blue-green eyes, wishing, just for a second, that they were a real couple, not two people thrown together by violence.
“Robin?” he said in such a soft voice she wasn’t sure he’d spoken.
They paused. With a tender smile, he reached out and slipped a few strands of hair behind her ear. She closed her eyes, leaning into his touch.
Everything fell away, as she drifted into a moment of sincere and utter peace. Was this what love felt like?
He slipped his hand from her cheek, and she sighed, missing his warmth.
